Joyce & Clarence – Chinese Canadian Autumn Wedding
A Chinese-Canadian autumn wedding combines the elements of both cultures, creating a unique and memorable celebration. Joyce and Clarence were able to bring in both sides of their heritage to their autumn wedding at Waterstone Estates in Newmarket!
Chinese Canadian Weddings
Here are some ideas to incorporate into your Chinese Canadian autumn wedding at WaterStone Estate:
Firstly, Fusion Decor: Blend Chinese and Canadian aesthetics in your wedding decor. Combine traditional Chinese elements like red and gold colours, lanterns, and Chinese calligraphy with rustic autumn touches. This could include pumpkins, leaves, and wooden accents. Consider using traditional Chinese symbols such as double happiness or the dragon and phoenix motif in your decor.
Tea Ceremony: Include a traditional Chinese tea ceremony as part of your wedding day. This ceremonial ritual represents respect and gratitude towards parents and elders. Set up an elegant tea station where you and your partner serve tea to your respective parents and relatives. This is a way of symbolizing the union of families. Joyce and Clarence did this with their families just inside the window nook of the indoor reception space. For additional relatives, they brought in extra paper red cups since there were only 4 ceramic teacups that came with their set.
Attire: Incorporate both Chinese and Western elements into your wedding attire. The bride could wear a white wedding gown for the ceremony and change into a traditional Chinese qipao (cheongsam) or a modern Chinese-inspired dress for the reception. Or the other way around like J + C where she wore her cheongsam during the tea ceremony! The groom could wear a Western suit with a Chinese-inspired boutonniere or incorporate Chinese elements into his tie or pocket square.
Symbolic Gestures: Include symbolic gestures in your ceremony or reception to honor both cultures. You could have a Chinese lion dance performance to bring good luck and ward off evil spirits. Incorporate elements like the red envelope tradition, where guests gift money to the couple, or exchange Chinese wedding tea cups as a symbol of unity.
Bilingual Stationery: Create bilingual invitations, programs, and signage to reflect the multicultural nature of your wedding. Incorporate both English and Chinese languages to ensure all guests feel included and informed.
The First Look
Accordingly, remember to communicate your preferences and ideas with the venue and vendors at WaterStone Estate to ensure they can accommodate your specific requests. Celebrating a Chinese Canadian autumn wedding allows you to honour your heritage while embracing the beauty of the season and creating a memorable experience for everyone involved.
The Wedding Day
J + C included door games following their tea ceremony, bright autumn colours that also included some red and gold, and brought in some gorgeous fall elements like twinkle lights, small pumpkins, and a grand entrance dancing on scooters to the song Thrift Shop by Macklemore & Ryan Lewis (not pictured).
