Journey To Becoming A Wedding Planner

I wrote a blog post three years ago on my old website and LinkedIn about my reflection on becoming an event planner, and what I had learned along the way. Some of those things still hold true now, even with the decision to focus on wedding celebrations. Here’s a bit about my journey to becoming a wedding planner!

The Beginning of Being a Wedding Planner

While I was at university, I was sitting in a coffee shop with my friend one day, with my green tea latte in one hand and my phone in the other. When she asked whether or not I had considered going into events, I was at a loss. I could get a job planning events? Is this real life?  Obviously, I had missed the memo that event planners existed in a multitude of capacities! To back track, she had asked me this because in 2nd year, she (as my housemate) saw me maybe 3 times a week — this might not seem like it’s relevant, but it is. I had been working on theatre shows, while planning youth group, planning music, and planning camp programs in the 4 university years — to a point where there were times that I was up to my eyeballs in work.

Luckily, I still loved doing it! My life was one big plan and one million tiny other plans, and it was pretty glorious.

The now

Fast track a few years after I completed my post graduate of Events Management with Humber College. I worked a variety of event types and event roles. I tried out conference planning, venue management, fundraising, and wedding coordination – and it really came down to this:
the best moments were always when a couple looked at each other and cried tears of joy because they are just so overwhelmed with beautiful emotion. THAT. That right there couldn’t be beat for me.

“We loved with a love that was more than love.”

Edgar Allan Poe

Learning Love

With my first forays into the wedding world, I initially learned what it meant to be a wedding planner from a company in Toronto. I learned what it meant to create a momentous moment for two people (and everyone celebrating with them). And I also learned what an amazing bunch of creative people there are in Ontario. Wedding celebrations come together with great planning, and also, great people.

If there’s anything I’ve learned, it’s that love is love is love and that we should cherish the little things. Planning a wedding can be a lot of work for the people involved, but at the end of the day, we’re all there to celebrate and create beautiful memories — together.
